Since 2001, Matthew has been a teacher, performer, collaborator, and composer of music. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Cal Poly State University San Luis Obispo. In addition to teaching at Foothills Music Academy, he is the bass section leader/soloist for the Church of our Savior San Gabriel Choir and has conducted performances of his own works for the Cal Poly Spring Choral Concert, Choral Taste of Los Angeles, and the Neighborhood Music School, Est. 1914.
Matthew is an experienced soloist, having worked with college and church choirs and ensembles, as well as popular artists and professional orchestras, such as Bobby McFerrin, Judy Collins, and Michael McDonald, Pasadena Pro Musica under Stephan Grimm, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel.
For over 20 years, Matthew has taught Voice, Piano, Music Theory, and Composition to students of all ages, be they interested in the chords and melodies of blues, folk, and popular music, or the forms, techniques, and interpretations of jazz and the classical tradition. As all students’ needs are different, he emphasizes an empathetic, encouraging style of instruction, believing that music lessons should be rewarding and fun, as well as edifying and challenging.
